External Diameters, Faces, and Shoulders
External turning can produce straight and stepped diameters, while facing establishes end surfaces used for length control, locating, sealing, or assembly. Shoulders may locate bearings, seals, spacers, retaining components, or mating parts.
- Critical outside diameters
- Bearing, sliding, or sealing surfaces
- Locating faces and shoulders
- Reliefs, undercuts, chamfers, and radii
- Edge, burr, and functional surface requirements
A diameter and a face can each meet their individual size requirements while their relationship still affects the final assembly. Define critical relationships through the drawing.
