Functional Parts Without Production Tooling

FDM builds three-dimensional parts by depositing heated thermoplastic filament layer by layer, following the geometry of a digital model.

For suitable components, it offers a cost-effective way to evaluate designs, produce custom fixtures and manufacture small quantities without investing in injection molds.

Engineering Thermoplastics

Choose from suitable filament materials according to the part's mechanical, thermal and environmental requirements.

Flexible Internal Structures

Adjust wall thickness, infill patterns and internal density to balance component performance, weight, material usage and manufacturing cost.

Design Changes Without New Tooling

Modify your CAD model and produce revised components without changing a production mold, making FDM useful for engineering iterations.

Select a Material Around the Application

FDM uses thermoplastic filaments with different mechanical, thermal and environmental characteristics. Material suitability depends on the specific grade, printing process and intended operating conditions.

Material Group Examples Typical Considerations
General-purpose PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA Concept models, housings and general prototypes
Engineering PC, PC-ABS, PA (Nylon) Functional components, fixtures and applications with higher performance requirements
Specialty materials — subject to project review Specific grades confirmed after application and supply review Applications requiring specialized thermal, chemical or electrostatic properties

Material availability: Examples indicate material families, not stocked grades. Confirm the specific grade, equipment compatibility and supply scope during project review.

Although some FDM materials belong to the same polymer families used in conventional plastic manufacturing, printed-part properties may differ from molded parts because of layer bonding, orientation, internal structure and processing conditions.

Design Around the Load Case

Wall structure, infill and print orientation work together to determine how a part performs.

Sparse internal structureOpen internal structures can reduce weight, material use and printing time where the load case allows.
Denser internal structureHigher density may suit selected functional parts, but it does not guarantee proportionally higher strength.
Thicker perimeter wallsPerimeter walls, material and layer bonding must be reviewed together with the expected loads.

Build Orientation Matters

Build Z
Tensile load along the layer plane
Build Z
Tensile load across layer interfaces

Layer bonding can limit strength when tensile loads act across layer interfaces. Identify critical loading directions before selecting the build orientation.

Orientation also affects visible layer patterns, dimensional behavior and support placement. Balance critical fits, appearance and support removal against printing time and material use.

Finition de surface & Post-Processing

FDM parts normally retain visible layer lines. Surface appearance depends on material, layer height, orientation and printing conditions.

Standard Support Removal

Support structures are removed where accessible. The resulting contact areas may require additional finishing.

Sanding & Painting

Selected parts can be prepared for improved appearance through mechanical finishing, surface preparation and painting.

Material-Compatible Smoothing

Certain thermoplastics may be suitable for specialized smoothing processes. Availability and compatibility must be confirmed for the selected material and geometry.

Additional Finishing

Where appropriate, selected holes, mating features or contact surfaces may be evaluated for secondary machining or other finishing operations.

When Is FDM the Right Choice?

FDM is particularly useful when function, material selection, structural flexibility and cost control matter more than achieving the finest surface details.

Process Consider When
FDM Thermoplastic functional prototypes, fixtures, housings and selected low-volume parts
SLS Complex nylon geometries, interlocking features and powder-bed parts without conventional printed supports
SLA Fine visual details and smooth prototype surfaces using photopolymer resins
PolyJet Detailed appearance models, selected full-color features and compatible multi-material combinations

For tight-tolerance interfaces, high mechanical loads or production volumes beyond the economical range of FDM, Usinage CNC or injection molding may be more suitable.

Design Tips for Your FDM Enquiry

  • Mark critical features. Identify mating surfaces, mounting holes and visible faces.
  • Describe the test. State loads and operating conditions so the material and structure can be reviewed.
  • Review large parts as assemblies. Consider split lines and joining requirements before choosing segmented printing.

Questions fréquemment posées

Can FDM parts be strong enough for end-use applications?

Oui, for suitable applications. Material properties, loading direction, build orientation, wall structure and infill all influence performance. Critical or safety-related applications may require additional engineering validation and testing.

Is 100% infill always the strongest option?

Not necessarily. Increasing infill can improve certain performance characteristics, but wall thickness, matériau, orientation and layer bonding also matter. The appropriate structure depends on the load case.

Can visible layer lines be removed?

Their appearance can often be reduced through suitable finishing methods, such as sanding, surface preparation or compatible smoothing processes. The result depends on material and geometry, and a completely smooth surface cannot be assumed.

Can FDM produce large parts?

Part size is limited by the available equipment and build arrangement. Oversized parts may be evaluated for segmented printing and subsequent assembly, depending on functional requirements.

What is the difference between desktop and industrial FDM printing?

Capabilities vary by machine rather than by label alone. Industrial systems may offer more controlled environments, qualified material options or repeatable process settings, while individual desktop systems can also produce useful engineering components.

The appropriate equipment is selected according to the material, component requirements and available manufacturing arrangements.

How do I choose between FDM and SLS?

FDM is a practical choice for many thermoplastic prototypes, fixtures and parts with adjustable internal structures. SLS may be better suited to selected complex nylon geometries where conventional support structures would be difficult to remove.

The final choice should consider mechanical performance, géométrie, exigences de surface, quantities and total cost.
