CNC Milling Capabilities by Part Feature

Feature review

CNC milling removes material with a rotating cutting tool while the workpiece is held in a controlled position. The useful question for a buyer is which surfaces and feature relationships the process needs to create, protect, and verify.

Faces / карманы / пазы

Establish Surfaces and Controlled Regions

Face milling establishes mounting or reference faces. Pockets and slots create recesses, channels and functional clearances.

Identify the datum face, feature depth, bottom condition, internal radii and mating walls. Deep features, narrow access and small corners can change the tooling and setup needed to reach the finished condition.

Отверстия / резьбы / edges

Define Position, Entry, and Edge Condition

A milling route may include drilled, bored, reamed, countersunk, counterbored or threaded features. Specify position, ориентация, depth, thread requirements and the relationship to a mounting face or another hole.

Identify functional chamfers, sealing edges and controlled deburring. State the edge condition needed for handling or assembly.

Profiles / contours / multi-face

Review Access and Feature Relationships

Profiles define a component’s outline; contouring creates more complex surfaces. Features on different faces may require repositioning, indexed orientations or a multi-axis review.

Evaluate access, support, datum transfer and measurement together. An operation name alone does not define the accepted component.

Typical Milled-Part Geometry

Use the functional features to describe the component, rather than a part name alone.

Mounting Plates and Brackets

Reference faces, hole patterns and locating slots need a clear relationship to the assembly datums.

Housings and Pocketed Components

Pockets, bores and sealing faces bring tool reach, internal corners and wall stability into the same review.

Multi-Face Components

Angled holes, profiles and opposing features require a setup plan that preserves their position and orientation.

Process selection

Choose Milling Around the Complete Part

Faces, карманы, пазы, hole patterns and profiles commonly point toward milling. Predominantly rotational geometry calls for a turning review.

Mixed geometry may require another operation. Quote the complete accepted component, including transfers and the inspection of features created in different setups.

Angled holes, restricted access and features across several faces can justify a 5-axis review when it resolves an access, setup or datum problem.

Plan Geometry, Access, and Workholding Together

Datum strategy

Connect Critical Features to Functional Datums

A mounting face may locate a hole pattern. A pocket may position another component. A sealing surface may need to remain related to a bore, or features on opposite faces may need to align after assembly. Mark these relationships clearly so the machining and inspection plan can treat them as a connected requirement.

Identify which dimensions control fit, движение, уплотнение, выравнивание, или сборкой. Features with wider design freedom can then be distinguished from the characteristics that must remain tightly controlled. This helps avoid applying demanding requirements to every surface while still protecting the part's function.

Make Tool Access Part of the Design Review

Глубокие полости, narrow slots, small internal corners, and inaccessible side features can require longer tools, additional orientations, or another manufacturing approach. If the design allows flexibility, state the acceptable internal radius, corner relief, access opening, or alternative feature arrangement.

Any design adjustment remains subject to the component's function and the design owner's approval. Proposed changes should be documented in the controlled model and drawing before manufacture.

Part stability

Account for Thin Walls and Distortion-Sensitive Geometry

Тонкие стенки, large pockets, uneven sections, and extensive material removal can make a part sensitive to its material condition, support, clamping, and machining sequence. Define whether important dimensions apply in a freely supported state, in a fixture, or under a specified assembly condition.

Workholding should locate and support the component without creating an unacceptable measured result. The appropriate roughing, finishing, and inspection approach is evaluated for the actual material and geometry. No single clamping or machining strategy suits every distortion-sensitive part.

Planning focus

Critical relationships, доступ инструмента, support, and measurement conditions belong in one review because each can affect the machining route and the accepted result.

Match Material and Finish to the Milling Plan

Входной материал

Класс, Condition and Stability

We machine commonly specified metals and engineering plastics, including aluminum, Нержавеющая сталь, Углеродистая сталь, Латунь, Медь, Бронза, titanium, POM, nylon, polycarbonate, ABS, PTFE and PMMA. Specific grades and suitability are reviewed for each project.

State the grade, condition and substitution restrictions. For pocketed or thin-walled parts, identify dimensions sensitive to support, clamping or material removal.

Finish input

Protect Functional Faces

Finishing options are reviewed for the material and project requirements. Identify the coating or treatment specification, cosmetic surfaces and masking areas.

Protect datums, резьбы, fits, sealing faces and electrical contact areas. State whether controlled dimensions apply before or after finishing.

Planning context

Material condition and secondary processing can affect machining behavior, Стабильность, Защищенные зоны, Размерный допуск, и этап, на котором элемент принимается.

Build Inspection Around the Features That Matter

Inspection planning should follow the same feature relationships that drive the milling route. A flat mounting face, a hole pattern located from that face, a pocket controlling assembly position, and a finished sealing interface may each need a different verification method.

GPT Precision is ISO 9001:2015 сертифицировано. Inspection methods can include CMM, optical measurement, dimensional gauges, inspection fixtures, and fit and function gauges. The appropriate method depends on the feature, access, datum structure, допусков, surface condition, and agreed acceptance criteria.

Straightforward dimensions may be checked with suitable dimensional measuring tools. Hole positions, geometric characteristics, and relationships to datums may be evaluated with CMM inspection. Visible profiles or edges may suit optical measurement, while repeatable interfaces can be assessed with an inspection fixture or a fit and function gauge. The final method is confirmed against the actual feature and acceptance requirement.

Specify required dimensional reports, first article inspection, CPK, PPAP, SPC, lot control or sampling records in the RFQ. Format, scope and applicability are agreed during quotation; reports are not an automatic package.

What to Include in a CNC Milling RFQ

Files

Current 2D drawing and 3D model with matching revisions; assembly information where relevant.

Order

Material grade and condition, количества, target schedule and substitution restrictions.

Функция

Critical faces, pocket depths, datums, hole relationships, threads and permissible internal radii.

Acceptance

Отделка, masking, edges, measurement condition, inspection scope and required records.

Maximum part size is evaluated for each project according to the drawing, материал, процесса, Крепление заготовки, and equipment fit. Available capacity and production lead time are also evaluated for the specific requirements and confirmed during quotation or order review.

CNC Milling FAQs

Use these questions to prepare a clearer drawing package and focus the process review on the complete component.

Проверка входящих данных RFQ
How should an internal corner be specified?

State the functional clearance and any permissible radius. Deep pockets and small internal corners should be reviewed together because tool reach and stiffness affect the route. Design changes require the design owner’s approval.

When is a 5-axis review useful?

Consider it for angled features, restricted access or features distributed across multiple faces where repositioning complicates datum relationships. Additional axes should resolve a specific manufacturing problem.

Can a milled component include turned features?

Да. A cylindrical interface can require another operation. Include the complete component and the relationship between features created in different setups.

How should thin-walled parts be measured?

Specify whether controlled dimensions apply freely supported, fixtured or assembled. Review support and measurement conditions against the functional requirements before manufacture.
